The Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) is a non-university research centre (member of the Leibniz Association) and a leading centre for advanced spatial sustainability science in Germany. It has a strong research focus on urban sustainability transformations. The work is financed from federal funds, from tax revenue on the basis of the budget passed by the Saxon State Parliament, and from third-party funds. In 2023, around 90 researchers were employed. Besides research, the IOER ist engaged in university teaching. The research team at the IOER contributes to the project with their interdisciplinary competencies in urban and environmental planning and sustainability transformation, urban regeneration, (landscape) architecture and public space design, GIS/spatial analysis and modelling, monitoring and geovisualization of different urban structures and elements, and transport economics. Public, private and civil society actors are involved in the research process from the very beginning in order to jointly strengthen the capacity for adaptation and change transformation in different spatial contexts.
